Crime – The favourite genre of OTTs

 

We all have watched multiple shows on OTT platforms. The genre of those is of all types. From new content, to old movies we love the OTT platforms. Netflix was the first to start and the first to produce the shows. Even though the choice of viewing content differs from individual to individual, crime is most watched on all OTT platforms. The content makers, henceforth make most of their content around this.

I always had this question, what can be the reason behind this?
The first is the idea of glorifying crime and villains. Movies across the globe have always glorified the power and money that is found with a negative character. Youth is fascinated by it and wants to be one of them to enjoy it. The series nowadays doesn’t even show the good guy coming at the end. It shows another criminal, with more power and courage taking over.
The second reason is the connectivity to the reality we see around it. Let us accept that a lot of it is a reflection of the society. There are anti-social elements that exist, similar to that shown in the series, though mostly glorified. The mainstream media doesn’t show it, but it is seen around us. The OTT platforms, which aren’t regulated (yet) show that and hence, it is seen.
The third reason is the use of nudity and vulgar language. It is sad, yet it is a fact that the society is attracted to negativity more than positivity. They non-censorship or partial censorship is an issue that plays a part here. The filthy language has been heard around us and movies showing it is real. Nudity isn’t that real, but the mindset of certain people is towards it. Reality or soft porn- you tell me.

It is sad, that most of the reasons mentioned are a problem of the society. The reflection of society is good to see until it doesn’t influence the mind of the viewers to be one of them.
